floating-ellipsis / table

A crowded table.

Every row truncates four cells its own way: file names keep their extension, paths are cut at a separator, hashes in the middle. Hover a cut-off cell for its full text. Drag a column's edge, or let the table sweep, and watch the timings.

Every instance reads layout, then every instance writes, round after round, so a resize lays the page out a few times in all rather than a few times per cell. Rows more than a screen away wait until they come near. What's left is the browser's own layout: a <table> lays out every row whenever one changes, while grid rows with content-visibility: auto skip the ones off screen.
